Join the Blackstone Valley Tourisim Council in this "Paddle and Pull" event to help combat an invasive plant - the water chestnut! Girl Scouts will begin in the River Classroom learning about invasive species and how to prevent and remove them. Then we will move outside to the dock where we will receive kayak safety instructions from certified kayak instructors. Girl Scouts and their chaperones will then be taken out on the water along with instructors and a safety boat. After a short paddle to Valley Falls Pond, we will pick up the water chestnut and place it in bags. The safety boat will then transport those bags to land where they will be disposed of.
This is a wonderful opportunity for Girl Scouts to gain volunteer hours and to help the environment. All ages are welcome, but if a Girl Scout is under twelve they must be in a tandem kayak or canoe with a parent or guardian. Girl Scouts over twelve are welcome to paddle in a tandem kayak or go out in a single kayak. Ground support is needed as well, so if anyone would prefer to assist on land, they are welcome to help with bagging and cleaning! This is not a drop-off program. This program will be hosted at Central Falls Landing in Rhode Island.
