Date: Sun Mar 22, 4:00 PM EST - Sun Mar 22, 6:00 PM EST
In the Juniors Play in the Past Badge and Chess Patch workshop,
girls will learn the basics of chess, including the names of the
pieces, their values, how they move, and how to set up and read the
board. They will also explore the history of the Queen in chess,
discovering that there was originally no Queen piece and that over
time queens in history, such as Queen Isabell, have helped shape the
Queen's role in the game. In this workshop, we will examine the
Queen's historical evolution, discuss what makes us powerful like the
Queen, and celebrate with a Queen party while solving the oldest chess
puzzle, which uses only queens. This workshop is perfect for players
of all skill levels because it combines engaging lessons in both chess
and history. No prior chess experience is needed, and no chessboards
are required because all activities will be conducted using a virtual
chessboard. At the end of this chess journey, each girl can purchase
her Junior Playing the Past Badge from the Girl Scout Shop and will
receive a chess patch with a bishop charm which will be mailed to her
home. Most importantly, she will feel empowered by understanding more
about this ancient game.
