GSSNE is saddened to share the passing of Mary Lafferty, 103 years young and a lifelong Girl Scout. Since elementary school, Mary was involved with Girl Scouts, first in a troop and during the summers at Camp Hoffman, a place that she grew to love, and she spent many years there – as a camper, counselor, and assistant camp director. After her 8th and final summer as a camper at Hoffman, Mary participated in an exchange program and visited the United Nations, where she had the opportunity to report out on behalf of Girl Scouts.
Ever the teacher, Mary enjoyed working with the younger girls at Hoffman in "Wonderland." She was a Golden Eaglet recipient, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Mary attended an international exchange program in Brazil in 1954, where she was immediately put to the test speaking to a local politician as soon as she arrived. She credits Girl Scouting for teaching her to be ready for anything!
According to Mary, the greatest lesson she learned through Girl Scouting was that everyone is equal and all deserve to be heard. She took this into her work teaching and ensured all students got involved.
